bandaids don’t help you heal 🩹
bandaids can stop the bleeding, shield an open wound from infection, and certainly cover things up.
it won’t stop the pain though, nor will it actually heal the wound. that takes time, long-term methods, or targeting root causes with real solutions.
this isn’t really about literal bandaids. what metaphorical bandaids have you, and the systems around you, used to cover deeper inconveniences, inefficiencies, and pain?
the sf government will inhumanely shovel homeless folks off the street, and just like that, the streets are clear — for a week. the disparity is still there, and it will once again become apparent within days. the root cause of pain persists.
hospitals will prescribe a round of painkillers for your recurring migraines, and you’re numb to the pain that was toppling you over. as soon as the bottle empties, it just resurfaces. this bandaid did nothing, and the root cause of pain persists.
you will throw yourself into work and keep yourself busy to forget the turmoil that rots the back of your mind. great, you’ve granted yourself a few hours free of misery. but the sadness still creeps back in every night, and you’ll wake up with a pit of dread in your stomach. the root cause of pain persists.
this also applies to any kind of substance self-administered to “take away the pain” momentarily. it’s easy, it’s temporary. root causes are hard to unearth. they’re buried deep under layers of soil. it’s hard, it’s permanent.
what pain are you covering instead of confronting? are you overindexing on your bandaids?
