i don’t believe everything happens for a reason ☁️
we often hear “everything happens for a reason” as a message of comfort, but i don’t interpret it that way at all. it implies our pain was pre-ordained, and that’s frustrating.
none of us were meant to suffer or fated to develop trauma. it didn’t happen for a reason, and that’s exactly why i take comfort in the fact that this path wasn’t carved out for me right from the start. it just happened, and i can take control of the future.
i can’t say i believe in fate either. sure, there is luck and that can sometimes feel like fate, but nothing is ever entirely set for our trajectory. structural forces can steer us, but that isn’t the same as a universe intending our pain. we can acknowledge randomness and systemic constraints without surrendering to fatalism.
if the past wasn’t carved into stone, the future remains malleable. dismissing “everything happens for a reason” isn’t nihilistic, it’s empowering. by refusing to see suffering as foreordained, i reclaim control over what comes next. personal agency, what i choose next, matters more than any supposed destiny.
trauma and suffering don’t arrive as part of some grand, meaningful script. they can be arbitrary, products of chance or flawed human systems. i am not meant to feel pain or suffer. so when i do, i know it wasn’t destined, and i can change course. i can keep moving of my own volition and thrive.
you weren’t meant to be dealt a bad hand for life. i believe accepting that as your fate is a very sad thing. we’re all capable of greatness. misfortune can knock us down, and our own choices (and help from others) raise us back up.
you can’t tell a mother whose son just passed away that “everything happens for a reason.” it’s chaos, both good and bad. the only choice we have and can take full rein of is to persevere with kindness.
things just happen.
but they were never meant to.
