"know a guy" culture
community in india 💁♂️
there’s a wonderful social fabric that brings community together in the background of a lot of daily life in india. it’s the “know a guy” network. not in the shady sense we sometimes imagine, but in a super practical and community-powered way.
every time i’m here, it feels like every problem gets solved with some variation of, “don’t worry, i know someone.”
need breakfast delivered early in the morning? someone knows a lady who cooks from her home kitchen and sends out fresh food to a handful of houses nearby. traditional clothes wrinkled before a wedding? there’s a guy who comes by with an iron and has been doing it for half the neighbourhood for years. mehndi for the wedding events? a few artists that my uncle has in his contacts. clothing ideas and fittings? a woman who brings inspiration, takes measurements, and knows exactly which fabrics will work.
from the outside, it could look like luxury. these people just have a team of helpers on call.
this framing misses the point though. this isn’t about wealth as much as it’s about how the local economy is structured. it’s all local, relationship-based, and incredibly accessible as long as you’re tapped in. no huge companies or apps, just people that are part of the community. someone’s aunt who cooks well. someone’s cousin who learned mehndi. a tailor who’s been in the area for twenty years. a neighbour who knows who to call.
the network has sustained itself this long because everyone participates in it. you use the help available around you, and in doing so, you funnel money and work back into the same community you live in.
it’s a very different feeling from the anonymous service economy i’m used to, where everything runs through platforms, ratings, and delivery windows. here, the system runs on introductions, and trust travels from person to person.
there’s not much searching for services. you ask who knows a guy.
