onto today’s topic: thoughts on patriotism 🇺🇸
i have so far spent a single day in texas, and can i just say that these people love their state.
if i got a dollar for every time i read “texas” on a random banner, ad or anything, i’d probably be rich by now.
i’ve noticed there’s a lot of pride associated with nationality/state in the us, whereas it’s not really prominent in canada in the communities i was surrounded by. culture shock was seeing “freedom, america!” plastered all over a grocery store, where my local friend didn’t even realize how bizarre it was.
maybe patriotism is just subliminal messaging like that. 😭 who knows?
the next question that comes to mind is, why do people feel so strongly about their state and country here? is it because they align perfectly with the state laws, or a sports team, or general quality of life? i doubt that’s entirely the case.
i don’t feel particularly patriotic towards ontario or canada, and i wonder why that is. i guess being canadian isn’t really much of an entire identity, as it is in america. the notion of “being american, and proud” is a heavily pushed message in texas, hence why that pride is then translated into patriotism. 🦅
do you feel patriotic towards your state or country? i’m genuinely curious why or why not.
